THE SBS STORY

In 1986 Malarkey Roofing Products introduced a shingle which would dramatically impact the roofing industry. The shingle was the Alaskan SBS “rubber” modified 3-tab shingle. The Alaskan was designed to assist the roofing contactors in Alaska who had struggled for years with shingles that could not be installed in cold weather. Additionally many Alaskan roofing contactors also were repeatedly dealing with shingle "blow offs" in areas with high winds.

The Alaskan shingle, constructed using SBS “rubber” modified asphalt proved to be the ideal shingle for that rugged environment. Over the next two decades, word of the “rubber” shingles spread and soon Malarkey was selling SBS shingles in all types of harsh environments.

Michael Malarkey, Owner of Malarkey Roofing would not allow his marketing staff to offer high wind warranties until they could prove to him that the shingles would actually perform. They did this by exposing the shingles to elevated wind tests. In fact one of their tests had the shingle stapled, left unsealed and blown for two hours at wind speeds of 100 mph. The shingle stayed intact throughout the test.

Malarkey’s SBS modified shingles attract quite a bit of attention nation wide. In the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew, Dade County Florida rewrote building codes to assist its citizens in getting roofing products that actually could resist high winds. For months, the only shingle that was allowed to be installed in Dada County Florida was Malarkey’s Alaskan Shingle.

After several years of having our SBS “rubber” shingles in high wind markets, it was an inevitability that they would show up in areas experiencing hail storms. Again these shingles performed beyond anyone’s expectation in that they survived numerous hailstorms while the roofs on neighboring houses had to be replaced after a single storm. Malarkey’s SBS Modified shingles are one of the few asphalt shingles awarded the class 4-impact resistance rating.

The SBS “rubberizing” process used in manufacturing The Alaskan and Legacy shingles ensures the following advantages:

High wind endurance
The highest impact resistance rating available
Low temperature flexibility
Superior granule adhesion
Outstanding waterproofing

Malarkey continues to add features to their products, which surpass any other shingles available to the roofing contactor. For example, Malarkey has obtained patents for The Zone™. The Zone offers several advantages, not the least being a nailing area three times larger than older style laminated shingles.
