The project home is part of the GRO Parade of Homes this year is in Clark County, Washington, a growing exurb of Portland, Oregon where Malarkey’s headquarters are based. Featuring the finest in luxury home trends, this project shows how building sustainably yields incredible residential results. Better yet, the proceeds from the sale of this 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2900-square foot home will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

In addition to the ‘Sana’, Marnella is building net zero homes certified to the National Green Building Standard. Net-zero homes produce as much energy as it consumes annually. This is typically achieved with renewable energy sources such as solar panels and high efficiency HVAC systems among other solutions.

“I’m passionate about creating new green homes that people really want; infusing great style, healthy environments and energy efficiency with unparalleled value,” Marnella said. The ‘Sana’ for instance, includes a grow center for growing organic vegetables indoors, a water purification system, and a heightened air management system. There is even floor-to-ceiling wine wall worth toasting.

“Green building is not just about putting efficient equipment in a home. It’s about the systems and processes of the assembly,” he said. Net zero, defined simply by the United Nations, “means cutting greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions re-absorbed from the atmosphere.” The roof included.

For this project, Malarkey provided 40 squares Vista® AR roofing shingles in Midnight Black, and supporting products such as ice & water barrier, Arctic Seal® and Smart Start® starter shingles. Distributing these products to the jobsite was Roofline Supply, and Max Evolution was the roofing contractor that installed them. Not only do these shingles contain smog-reducing granules to help clean the air of emissions around the home, they are also made with a NEX® rubberized asphalt foundation which support the photovoltaic solar panel system atop the home. The EcoOffset for this roof equates to approximately 6 rubber tires and 4,300 plastic bags diverted from the landfill along with 2 trees ‘planted’ to help clean the air.

Through projects like the ‘Sana’ and others, Malarkey demonstrates our shared effort to decarbonize building with Holcim. These include circular construction and making building more sustainable. Circular construction builds new from old, as in the upcycled polymers from plastic and rubber used in our NEX® asphalt. Making buildings more sustainable is aided by Malarkey’s use of 3M Cool Roofing granules which reflect sunlight (yes, even Midnight Black!), help keep the home cool, and cut down on energy costs.

The roofing products, building materials and much of the labor for this dream home were all donated because 100% of our builder’s profit, after the sale of the house, will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“They all give as much as they can so we can get cost of the home down to as little as possible, so we can maximize proceeds to go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” Marnella told KOIN 6 News.

St. Jude is hoping to raise $630,000 from the sale of this home. Financial donations to the Dream Home can also be made to offset the cost of any construction materials not donated.

The St. Jude Dream Home program is one of the largest single-event fundraisers for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Since 1991 through the construction of more than 500 homes nationwide, the program has generated over $500 million for research and treatment.
