Asphalt Roofing Environmental Product Declarations

Malarkey Roofing Products recently worked with the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) to complete Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) focused on both steep and low slope roof systems. An EPD is a standardized way to help customers better understand the sustainable qualities of a product and its environmental impact over time. As one of several ARMA members, Malarkey contributed data for the industry studies.

EPDs are based on the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a products’ life from cradle-to-grave – otherwise known as the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The life cycle of a product begins with raw material extraction and processing, includes manufacturing and installation, then ends with removal and disposal at the end of its useful lifetime. All transportation steps necessary for a products’ existence are also included. EPDs are completed in accordance to standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Product and company information is also included in the written reports.

Malarkey provided information on raw materials and packaging used in asphalt roofing products, energy and water utilized during manufacturing, as well as waste to landfill and emissions to air due to the manufacturing process. Data regarding transport of raw materials to production facilities and distribution of finished products was also reported.

There are five different environmental life cycle impact categories commonly reported in EPDs:

•    Global Warming Potential (GWP) = global warming
•    Smog Creation Potential = ozone formation in the lower atmosphere
•    Acidification Potential = acid rain
•    Eutrophication Potential = over fertilization of the soil or water
•    Ozone Depletion Potential = thinning of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere

Results of these impact categories are presented as potentials and are approximations of environmental impacts that could occur.

In certain cases, EPDs are used to fulfill requirements for sustainable building projects certified to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Malarkey is proud to provide our customers with EPDs on the sustainable attributes of asphalt shingle, SBS modified bitumen (hot asphalt or cold adhesive installation) and built-up (hot asphalt installation) roofing systems. These EPDs can be found on the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) SPOT product database.
