In a demonstration of community spirit, Malarkey Roofing Products joined forces with Catalyst Partnerships NW to provide essential roofing materials for a restoration in Sherwood, Oregon. At 69 years old and facing the recent loss of her son alongside a critical roof failure, the homeowner found herself in need of the security only a stable home can provide. Dedicated volunteers stepped in to repair the home’s underlying structure before installing a high-quality Malarkey shingle roof. Through our Malarkey Cares initiative, this collective effort successfully returned dignity to the residence, transforming it into a lasting, functional sanctuary.

Recently, we had the honor of helping with a truly transformative project in Sherwood, Oregon alongside our longtime partner, Catalyst Partnerships NW. “Bringing together donated resources and caring people to provide critical construction repairs for under-resourced neighbors” is the organization’s mission. Malarkey most recently worked with Catalyst NW in 2022 on another Portland-area project.

This initiative in Sherwood was about much more than construction; it was about restoration, dignity, and the profound impact of neighbors coming together for a neighbor in need. Through Malarkey Cares, the company’s corporate social responsibility and community outreach program, we strive to leverage our resources not just for business, but to create tangible, positive change in the world.

The Story of a Home Transformed

For the past six years, the homeowner has called her home her ‘sanctuary.’ At 69-years-old and living on a limited income, she has worked diligently to maintain her property despite the challenges life has thrown her way.

This project carried an especially personal weight for the homeowner. For years, her son had been the person she could count on whenever a major home repair was needed. Following his recent passing, she found herself navigating overwhelming challenges without the support she had always relied on.

When Catalyst NW met her in early 2026, the situation had become critical. Her roof had begun leaking, allowing water to enter the home and causing real concern about structural integrity. While volunteers quickly stepped in to tarp the roof and stop the immediate water intrusion, a full assessment revealed the damage was far greater than expected. The roof had reached the end of its useful life, and nearly two-thirds of the plywood sheathing roof deck had deteriorated. Further inspection uncovered ten damaged roof trusses that required repair before a new, secure roof could be safely installed.

Community Support in Action

The transformation was nothing short of inspiring, made possible by 61 dedicated volunteers who generously gave 274 hours of service. Malarkey was privileged to contribute high-quality Highlander® AR roofing shingles to ensure the homeowner’s home was protected for years to come. Other materials included Secure Start® Lite underlayment, Arctic Seal® ice and water barrier, RidgeFlex® hip and ridge shingles, and Smart Start® starter shingles.

The project went beyond the roof, however, focusing on the whole home:

• Structural Integrity: Crews repaired damaged trusses and replaced deteriorating sheathing, ensuring a solid foundation for the new roof.
• Safety Improvements: Volunteers dug around the septic tank for service, trimmed overgrown trees, removed an unsafe, failing deck, and built a new front entry step to ensure safe access.
• A Personal Touch: The most meaningful part of the project was the care shown throughout the process. Volunteers shared conversations and offered encouragement, reminding the homeowner she was not facing these challenges alone.

A Lasting Impact through Malarkey Cares

Today, her home is a place of security and peace of mind. She no longer lives with the stress of a failing roof or the anxiety of navigating home maintenance on her own. Instead, she has a home that is safer, more functional, and easier to maintain.
