What's the Point?
The point is for nails to penetrate BOTH shingle layers.
The point of a larger nailing area is to help ensure that every nail hits and penetrates both shingle layers, where the two shingle layers overlap, in order to properly secure the shingle to the roof, and protect against shingle uplift and blow-off.
