Product Details

Underlayment for Shingles and Tile Roofs

A new roof requires more than just shingles. It’s a cohesive, coordinated system of 5 parts: 1) shingles, 2) underlayment, 3) ice and water barrier, 4) starter shingles, and 5) hip & ridge shingles.

Underlayment sits under the shingle and provides a vapor barrier covering the entire roof.

Malarkey offers two underlayments tailored to asphalt shingle roofs. Right Start® UDL is a superior underlayment, also suitable for tile roofs.

Water Barrier

Made with our proprietary NEX® Polymer Modified Asphalt for extra strength and durability, Right Start® UDL is a water resistant membrane applied to the wood decking of the entire roof as an extra layer of water penetration protection and backup to your shingles or tile.

Withstands Weight, Reduces Waste

Fortified with our proprietary NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology for extra strength and durability, Right Start® UDL can withstand extreme weight, as well as damage that can often accompany installation, making it the ideal underlayment for heavier, more labor-intensive, asphalt and tile roof installations.

Installed Second

When installing a complete 5-component system for your new roof, underlayment is installed second, after the ice & water barrier, and prior to the starter shingles.

NEX® Rubberized Asphalt

Mechanically Fastened

Installed with just enough fasteners (nails or staples) to hold the material firmly in place and work safely (or per adopted building code) until shingles can be applied.

Strong & Durable

Modified asphalt sheets, reinforced with rubber and plastic polymers on a fiberglass mat, deliver greater tear strength than conventional felt membranes for lasting durability.

Water Resistant

Naturally waterproof asphalt helps resist water penetration.

Safer Installation

Sand surface helps prevent accidents by providing an anti-skid surface for workers, and keeps roofing materials from sliding.

UV Stability

Sand surface can withstand 90 days of direct sunlight, providing a waterproof roof for longer duration installations.

Fire Resistance (FR)

Class A fire rated in a system assembly over a combustible or non-combustible deck.

Enhanced Warranty

Enhanced warranties are available when product is used in a complete roofing system of Malarkey shingles and accessories, and installed by a Malarkey Certified Contractor.

Right Start® UDL is eligible for expanded warranty coverages relative to its use as a single roofing accessory or in combination with others in a complete Malarkey roofing system. Installed separately, it carries a 10-year product warranty against manufacturing defects. Contact Malarkey’s Technical Services Department for details.
